But their bubble soon burst. She added: “We were in an ancient amphitheatre and the views over the Tuscan hills were spectacular.

“But we sat down with thousands of others and a horrendously boring opera about the French Revolution began.

“We were all wondering what was going on. There were coach tours from the UK and the Netherlands and people looking bewildered.”

Initially, Nicola and her friends thought the opera preceded Bocelli
