Muir ready to bear teeth in history tilt

- Mark Woods

Laura Muir plans to maul her rivals in a chase for history tonight – then run wild with some proper big beasts.

The Scot is odds- on favourite to become the first British woman to win the outdoor 1500m European title.

One final burst in a non-stop year that has seen her pick up a first-class degree to qualify as a vet before hitting the circuit with a vengeance.

Now the 25-year-old will finally get the chance to put the proceeds from her six-figure Nike deal to good use by taking a first holiday in five years.

She said: “I’m getting two weeks off. So I thought: ‘Let’s just do it’.

“I’ve finished my degree, it’s the end of the season and I’ve got some big years coming up – so I might not get the opportunity to go away so much.

“I’ll start off in Toronto then it’s off to Calgary in the Rocky Mountains to hopefully see some grizzly bears.”

Eilish McColgan is praying she’s not running on empty in the 5000m after battling through illness at her altitude training camp in Switzerland.

She said: “I think my virus is finished. I’m starting to feel a bit better now.”

nTom Bosworth was seventh in yesterday’s 20km walk – won by Spain’s Alvaro Martin – after the Brit’s bid wobbled in the closing stages.
