A tough start for Murray

-

Andy Murray has been handed a testing first-round draw at the Cincinnati Open as he continues his comeback from hip surgery.

Having received a wild card invitation in Ohio, Murray will face 16th seed Lucas Pouille from France in round one.

The former Wimbledon tennis champion won three long matches at last week’s Citi Open in Washington before withdrawing from his quarter-final. The Scot then opted to miss this week’s Rogers Cup in Toronto. World snooker champion Mark Williams admitted he “got out of jail” as he defeated Noppon Saengkham to reach the final of the Hong Rui Ma Yushan World Open.

Welsh ace Williams trailed his Thai opponent 5-2 but recovered to claim a 6-5 win and set up a final with David Gilbert in China.

Gilbert, looking to win his first ranking title, beat fellow Englishman Barry Hawkins 6- 4 in their semi. New dad Chris Woakes gave himself extra reason to celebrate with a brilliant maiden Test century on his Lord’s comeback.

Cricketer Woakes’ 120 not out was the lynchpin of England’s recovery from 131 for five as the hosts closed day three of the Specsavers Second Test on 357 for six – with a lead of 250 over India. Glasgow Rocks have s igned Amer ican basketball shooting guard Kenny Carpenter from Cleveland State University. Paul Di Resta requires a big win today after the Scot finished 16th in the DTM Championship at Brands Hatch. Ahead of today’s 12th round the Mercedes driver trails title favourite Gary Paffett by 35 points.
