Paul Gascoigne’s appearance on a TV show yesterday morning had to be cut short over claims he was drunk.

The football legend, who has struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction for more than 20 years, was on Sky’s Soccer AM and seemed to be slurring his words.

After leaving the show before the end, fans expressed their fears about his wellbeing. The former Rangers hero insisted he had taken sleeping tablets before going on air.

He posted on Twitter: “Some say I’m looking well, others say it’s the best they’ve seen me and others are saying I was drunk. It’s every time I’m doing well that’s OK I been taking sleeping tablets to try kip that all love GAZZA”.

Gascoigne previously attended rehabilitation in 2013 an attempt to beat his alcoholism.

His most recent spell in rehab was in 2017 following the death of a relative.

Gascoigne has also received £ 40,000 from the Football Association and the England Footballer’s Foundation to fund his addiction treatment.

During yesterday’s show, Soccer AM host John Fendley told viewers that the football legend was not feeling well.

Viewers claimed the former soccer superstar looked uncomfortable on the sofa.

The 51-year- old had been talking to hosts Jimmy Bullard, Lloyd Griffith and Fendley before his “disappearance”.

Fendley added: ‘“Gazza was here earlier but he was not feeling wonderful, he’s left us and we’ll catch up with him very soon. We wish you all the very best mate.”

Some viewers slammed the decision to invite him on to the show.

One posted: “He can barely speak.”
