Cash-strapped families face being charged £1500 more for holidays depending on which Scottish airport they fly from.

A Sunday Mail investigation has found huge disparities in the cost of identical holidays from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen during the school October break.

In the worst case, a family of four were £1521 cheaper travelling to the same resort in Portugal on the same day using Glasgow Airport instead of Edinburgh.

Departing from Aberdeen would have saved £1254 on the Edinburgh price.

Joanne Dooey, of industry body the Scottish Passenger Agents’ Association, said: “It’s long been the case that Scots have beaten a path to Newcastle or Manchester to save money on package prices.

“But the Sunday Mail research highlights the need to shop around even within Scotland and not simply buy blind online. airports. Some of the holidays were restricted to departures from just Glasgow or Edinburgh but others were available from Aberdeen or Inverness. In each case, we compared like with like.

In all but one of the holidays, it was significantly cheaper to fly from Glasgow.

Only Thomas Cook to Majorca was £ 376 less from Edinburgh.

Joanne, who has 30 years of experience in the travel industry, added: “If you break down the wor s t example, the Glasgow flights allocated by the agent are with a low-cost carrier and that’s why the overall holiday cost is less.

“Budget flights were obviously not avai lable from Edinburgh for the same holiday with the same agent on the same day. So the flight price is massively more expensive. “ButB a consumer wouldwou never know that,that especially if theyth are buying online and sticking to one departure airport.” Our findings i l lustrate the need to check prices carefully, even within Scotland.
