YEARS, SILVER-HAIRED 61-YEAR-OLD COMES OUT TO SHINE
to go au natural. I tell them to get on with it and join the tribe.
“When I hit 50, I was determined I wouldn’t become invisible and going grey has ensured that hasn’t happened.
“I may not have the dewy youthfulness of my beautiful daughters but I’ve got just as much to say and to aspire to and I plan to keep on shining.
“Just like you grow into your personality, people tend to grow into their looks. When you are older, you know what suits you. You are more settled in your own skin. Being 60 is so liberating.”
Older models used to be restricted to healthcare or life insurance campaigns but now silver- haired beauties are in huge demand, appearing in adverts and on catwalks all over the world.
Shayne said: “I’m a big fan of Maye Musk and Daphne Selfe. How can anyone say these women aren’t gorgeous?
“Society has changed and diversity has become accepted. Everyone wants to see folk of all shapes, sizes and ages in advertising campaigns as it makes the products relative to them.
“People are looking at beauty in different ways. It’s no longer about having an 18- year- old blonde modell ing everything. It’s good to see people from all walks of life representing brands.”
But she said it is strange being in the limelight after spending three decades on the other side of the lens. She added: “I worked in advertising for 30 years. I started out at Saatchi & Saatchi in London as a casting director for TV, radio and cinema commercials.
“It was the 80s and it was lots of fun as the power of advertising had just been recognised and it was boom time for the business. I cast models and actors for all the big names – British Airways, Procter & Gamble and British Rail.
“I moved to Edinburgh 22 years ago when my ex-husband got a job up here and that’s when I began working with the Leith Agency.
“I retired earlier this year to concentrate on modell ing full- time. It’s bizarre that all these years later I’m on the other side of the lens starring in the ad campaigns.”
Alison Bruce, of modelling agency Colours, said: “Shayne is a trailblazer. She embraces her age and her life. She is one of the few women who will tell you she looks her best now in her 60s.
“She is in demand with al l the top advertisers, with bookings coming in all the time.” The mother of Tesla billionaire Elon began modelling when she was 15 years old in South Africa.
To celebrate her 60th birthday, she stopped colouring her hair, cut it and let her natural silver colour shine.
The new look brought a major campaign for Virgin America, billboards in Times Square and covers of Vogue, Elle and many others.
Maye still walks the runway at New York Fashion Week.
Born in London, Daphne has been modelling since 1949. She’s done an impressive number of fashion and beauty campaigns in recent years, including M&S and Selfridges. She has modelled for Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Red or Dead and TK Maxx.
The French-born beauty has fronted campaigns for M&S, JD Williams and Hermes among others. Yasmina didn’t start her fashion career until 28.
