Maguire: I made it child’s play for him

-

Stephen Maguire dubbed his semifinal show up to the standard of “a 12-year-old” as he missed out on a place in today’s English Open Final.

The Glaswegian potter, 37, led Stuart Bingham 3-2 only to crash to a 6-3 loss in Crawley and miss out on a place in his first showpiece in almost 18 months.

The world No.16, who still finished up with £20,000, said: “I only have myself to blame because I had loads of chances. When you miss balls like I did, you deserve to lose.

“I never played well, I was all over the place. I was overhitting everything – my positional play was like a 12-year-old.” Glasgow Rocks coach Darryl Wood insists his side must forget their early-season slump when they face up to London Lions today.

A loss to Sheffield on Friday made it four defeats in a row for the Scots who are third bottom in the British Basketball League.

Rocks endured a 34-point drubbing in London last month but Wood said: “It doesn’t matter if we’ve played them before.

“There are always adjustments. We beat ourselves in London so we need to do everything better than the last time. We also need to take points at home, especially in our first game of the season on our regular home court.

“It’s where we train, it’s where we play so we need to protect it.” Kyle Edmund will face Gael Monfils in today’s European Open Final after the British No.1 saw off Richard Gasquet 6-3 6- 4 in an hour and 16 minutes.
