Game over for Brogan

-

Albion Rovers boss John Brogan last night resigned after his League Two side went down 2-0 to Highland League scalphunters Formartine.

Archie Macphee fired United ahead early on before Lewis McLear’s spot-kick for the home team was easily saved by Kevin Main after Graeme Rodger was judged to have handled the ball.

Rovers’ Ross Fisher was then sent off when he was shown a second yellow.

And Formartine sealed their win 12 minutes from time when Andy Greig netted from the spot after Lewis Wilson had flattened Garry Wood.

Brogan said: “It is time to give someone else a shot while there is still a lot of the season left.

“The players and directors have been great but there are huge financial pressures here. Whilst the junior players we brought in have been criticised we do not have the budget to bring the top ones in.”

Peterhead saw off Barry Ferguson’s new team Kelty Hearts 3-2.

But the Lowland League side gave the Blue Toon a late scare when Matthew Gay scored in injury time.

Queen’s Park keeper Jordan Hart saved a lastgasp penalty from Jordan Allan as the Spiders defeated Stirling Albion 2-1 at Forthbank.

Cowdenbeath beat League Two rivals Clyde 2-1 with Robbie Deas scoring in the first half and David Cox in the second before David Goodwillie got the Bully Wee back into things late on.

Beith marched into the third round after sinking Linlithgow Rose 4-0 with goals from Jamie Wilson, John Sheridan, Darren Christie and Paul Frize.

Gary Thom’s sending off added to Rose’s woes.

New Berwick manager Johnny Harvey got his tenure off to a winning start with a 3-1 victory against non-league Gretna 2008 at Shielfield.

Harvey was only appointed in midweek as a replacement for Robbie Horn, who resigned a fortnight ago.

Edinburgh City defeated a Civil Service Strollers side managed by their old boss Gary Jardine 1-0 thanks to Robbie McIntyre.

And Elgin City sent Whitehill Welfare out with goals from Greg Morrison and Darryl McHardy.

Annan’s long trip to Rothes was worthwhile with David Wilson’s goal winning it 1-0.

East Kilbride handed former Motherwell striker Chris Humphrey his debut in a 3-1 comeback win over Spartans.
