Stevie’s turning heads

- Martin Cameron

Robbie Fowler reckons Rangers might struggle to hang on to Steven Gerrard if he continues to make big strides at Ibrox.

Rookie boss Gerrard will lead Gers into battle against Aberdeen in the Betfred Cup semi today.

And he heads into the Hampden clash having made it 11 games unbeaten as a boss in Europe.

Fowler has been blown away by the start his old Liverpool team-mate has made at Ibrox.

And the former England striker said: “I had a few doubts about Gerrard going there. But if he can win a trophy expect Stevie to have a decision to make at the end of the season.

“Especially if he steers his side through to the latter stages of the Europa League.

“A manager who wins trophies and knows how to do well in Europe?

“I can think of quite a few really big clubs who would take that CV!”

Gerrard’s greatest achievement at Liverpool was the Champions League Final in 2005 as he inspired a stunning comeback win over AC Milan.

And Fowler said: “I was in the crowd in Istanbul and that incredible win is etched on my memory.

“Steven made it his final. The images of him are iconic, his desire just off the scale.

“I saw that many times over the years at Anfield, saw it the day he first trotted out on the first-team training pitch.

“And I’m seeing it now from Stevie, in Scotland.”

Gers head into today’s semi desperate to end their wait for a major trophy.

And Fowler insisted: “Getting to a final at his first attempt will show people what Stevie’s about.

“He can’t do anything out there on the pitch. He can’t win a cup tie by sheer force of personality like he did that 2005 final.

“But he can give his side the knowledge of what it takes to win those games, because he has done that often enough.”
