We’ll see lot Muir of Jake

-

Jake Wightman revealed he is being spurred on to be a double medal star by Laura Muir.

The Commonwealth and European 1500m bronze medallist is hoping to hunt down 800m glory next year too.

And he admits watching fellow Scot Muir dominate in both events is inspiring him going into a World Championship year.

He said: “Every Scottish and British athlete has seen Laura over the last few years progress and shown that she can mix it with the world’s best and challenge for global medals.

“And there’s nothing that makes her any different from us, she has been brought up with Scottish Athletics, she still lives and trains in Scotland.

“It is just her gutsiness and her grit, which a lot of Scottish athletes possess.

“That shows that if we get the right opportunities and some good training behind us we can try to do the same at champs.”

Asked if he’s the male equivalent of Euro 1500m champ Muir, he said: “I don’t know, I need to get a bit better to be the male equivalent of Laura I think.

“I feel like a lot of 800-1500 athletes could be better at doubling but don’t really spread their attention over both.

“I’m glad that at the moment I can be the one showing you can do both and hopefully encourage a lot more to do it in the future.”

The 24-year-old admits going for both in Glasgow when the Euro Indoor Championships arrive in March will be a long shot.

But he added: “I hope going for both will become the norm for me. A lot of athletes historically have shown you can do both.

“And Laura winning the 800m this year at the British champs shows how compatible both events can be.

“I like to think my 800m helps my 1500m and vice versa. It’d be nice to be as good at both.”
