Scot Paul Gallagher scored then ended up as a stand-in goalie as Preston came from behind to draw 1-1 with Ipswich in Paul Lambert’s first game as Town boss.
The North End striker stepped off the bench in the 71st minute and within five minutes had levelled with a stunning free-kick.
He then sensationally pulled on the gloves after goalie Chris Maxwell was sent packing for a second yellow card – with Preston having used all their subs.
Gallagher’s free-kick was his first and only touch as an outfield player before he went between the sticks.
And Preston gaffer Alex Neil said: “I wanted to put Louis Moult in goal but Gal ly seemed to fancy himself as a goalkeeper.
“We got a corner and I wanted to bring him out because he’s got the best delivery at the club but he did well.
“It’s never dull for us at the minute but defensively we were OK today. It was always going to be a tough match and in Paul Lambert’s first game he was always going to get his team in your face.”
Lamber t was taking charge for the first time since replacing Paul Hurst.
And the former Celtic star said: “We started really well and couldn’t have asked for a ny more f rom the players. I’m proud of them and they were fantastic.
“If we were playing like that at the start of the season I wouldn’t be sitting here talking to you. We never got the win but it wasn’t t h rough lack of trying.
“The atmosphere was great throughout.”
Norwich City rose to the summit after securing their fourth successive league victory in an impressive 4- 0 win at Sheffield Wednesday.
Celtic flop Teemu Pukki continued his hot streak by bagging a double.
Sheff ield United were knocked off top as they suf fered a 1- 0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, with Lewis Grabban scoring.
Relegation strugglers Hull City recorded a shock 1- 0 victory against promotion hopefuls West Brom.
