McInally salutes leaders

-

Peterhead manager Jim McInally admitted he was relieved his men withstood a fight-back from bottom side Albion Rovers to top the table.

The Blue Toon went two goals up early on with a Derek Lyle double but the visitors rallied after the break and could have snatched a point.

After the 2-1 win, McInally said: “It was a game of two halves.”

“We knew before the game how strong the wind was going to be and I did not know if two goals would be enough.”

“Had we not conceded from the set-piece, we would have been okay because we were comfortable enough and we were still getting into good positions.”

Lyle rifled in a shot from eight yards in the fifth minute before he took his tally to five in three matches with a tap-in.

Albion did well to get to the break without falling further behind and pulled one back in 71 minutes.

Debutant Gerard Hernando Escuriola’s corner was headed home by Barry Eley but despite piling on late pressure, they could not force an equaliser and remain bottom on four points.

Edinburgh City sacrificed top spot to the Blue Toon after a narrow 1-0 loss to Clyde.

Veteran midfielder John Rankin scored the only goal of the game in 34 minutes.

City are now a point behind Peterhead while the Bully Wee climb above Annan into third.

Kevin Rutkiewicz notched up his first victory as manager of Stirling Albion after a 3-0 victory at home to Berwick Rangers.

Goals from Neil McLaughlin, Dylan Mackin and Daniel Jardine secured the win.

The victory ends a fourgame losing streak that carried on from the tenure of ex-boss Dave Mackay.

A Shane Sutherland goal in added time snatched victory for Elgin as they came from behind against Cowdenbeath.

Young midfielder Blair Malcolm put Cowden ahead in the first half but Elgin hit back in the second half through Ross County loanee Greg Morrison.

Sutherland, in his third spell at the Borough Briggs side, grabbed the winner in the third minute of added time.

Queens Park made it five games unbeaten as they drew 0-0 with Annan at Hampden.
