Missing pair found safe

-

A v ulnerable couple missing overnight in Stranraer have been found safe and well.

Police appealed for help in tracing Mary Smith, 63, and John Smith, 65, from the town.

The pair had been last seen in Bellevilla Road on Friday morning.

Police said: “Mary and John have been traced safe and well.”

Union leaders are furious that the victims were left to monitor 93 convicted criminals on their own at HMP Barlinnie when the attacks took place.

The incident happened when three parcels thought to contain cocaine and heroin were tossed over the perimeter of the prison in Glasgow’s east end.

Inmates passed the consignment around the yard of A Hall as staff tried to intervene.

A group of about 10 inmates then launched an assault on the off icers while the contents of two packages were distributed.

The remaining item was recovered after the alarm was raised and other prison officers rushed to help their colleagues.

Witnesses said staff brandished their batons in a tense stand-off before prisoners were taken back to their cells.

Officers have demanded that those involved in the attack are reported to police for rioting – an offence that could see extra time added to their sentence if found guilty.

The incident happened on Saturday, January 26. The injured officers did not receive medical attention but reported bruising.

Police said they were made aware of the incident three days later but are awaiting further details before they can start an investigation. Andy Hogg,
