Summit has to change for City

-

James McDonaugh hailed his battling City stars for extending their lead at the top – then warned them they’ll have to do better to stay there.

The capital side had to come from behind to beat rock-bottom Rovers and move four points clear at the summit.

But with a trip to face second-placed Peterhead next week, boss McDonaugh is looking for more.

He said: “They showed a great response to falling behind, and that’s a trait which has been evident a number of times this season.

“It maybe wasn’t one of our better performances today but we dug in and got over the line.”

Motherwell loan signing George Newell gave Rovers a surprise 19th-minute lead when he headed home from George Fotheringham’s corner .

But the leaders were back on terms six minutes later.

Craig Thomson picked out Allan Smith from a free-kick and the striker steered his header past keeper Peter Morrison.

Rovers gifted City the lead just after the halfhour mark. Morrison tried

to clear the danger after a horrendous defensive mix up but looked on in agony as the ball cannoned off Jack Breen and into the net.

Prolific hitman Blair Henderson wrapped up the win with his 31st goal of the season in the 57th minute.

Ben Reilly almost threw Rovers a late lifeline but saw his 20-yard effort crash back off the bar.

Rovers boss Kevin Harper reflected on his side’s defensive frailties.

He said: “The type of mistakes we’re making which are leading to goals is incredible.

“I thought we were the better team early on but after they got back level, we gave away a silly goal which killed it for us.”

McDonaugh said he was delighted to hold onto Henderson during the transfer window.

He said: “He’s happy here, he’s well looked after and he knows I think the world of him.

“There are parts of his game he can improve on but once again he showed his worth to us.”
