Truth is managers are wrong choice to help awful officials

-

Steve Clarke is bang on when he says it shouldn’t be down to managers to sort out the game.

Gaffers are the last folk we should be asking to fix football’s finer points.

Bosses don’t care about the overall well- being of their profession. They are only concerned about themselves and their clubs. And that’s fair enough. We all know the standard of officials has been rank rotten this season but there’s a common theme that runs through all of the complaints.

It’s managers moaning about decisions that go against them. When was the last time a boss came out and blasted a call that went for his side?

Clarke himself is as guilty as anyone. The job he has done at Killie has defied the forces of nature.

It sums up just how far he’s taken his club that they were down in the dumps after being edged out by a reborn Hearts team on Friday night.

Not so long ago, a couple of thousand hardy fans would have turned up, groaned at their players for 90 minutes and gone home grateful if they hadn’t seen another humiliating pumping.

But Clarke’s wee grump at the officials after the match was more one-eyed than a cyclops wearing a set of blinkers.

The ref lost control of the game, should have got his cards out earlier to stop mean old Hearts ruining the game. Come off it, Steve. The great thing about this Killie side is they are absolutely fierce. They’ve got a midfield full of rottweilers who sometimes go over the line.

They are also experts at shutting games down with the dark arts but when the tables are turned it’s not so nice.

Clarke was still seething at Kris Boyd’s red not being overturned on appeal, but it was a sending off every day of the week.

But managers only see what they want to see. They are also masters at spinning yarns. Every one of them does it, so much so, if a football boss tells you it’s Sunday, it’s best to grab the paper and check the details at the top.

They have never heard of a transfer target one minute and the next he’s got the club scarf above his head. The star man is definitely not leaving, only to be spot ted with a couple of suitcases getting loaded into the car at the stadium back door.

That was never a penalty against us, but I didn’t have a decent view of the dodgy one that won us the game last weekend. Turn it up guys. Gaffers send out sides to waste time, buy free-kicks, nick spot- kicks and all other kinds of skulduggery. They would kick their grannies to win three points, while telling porkies comes with the UEFA coaching badge.

There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s their job, but it does mean their opinions when it comes to officials is suspect.

By all means call them together and have a chat about some of the issues of the day. There’s no point handing them the car keys though as the place would be full of back-seat drivers.

Scottish football does need to raise the bar regarding referees and the whole judicial process. But when it comes to getting the bosses involved, we’ll manage without them thanks.
