That’s a Wright disaster for Saints

-

Tommy Wright ripped into his Betfred Cup flops and labelled their Forfar failings as embarrassing.

The Premiership side were already out before they arrived and Wright gave his fringe players a run out – but they firmly derailed their firstteam hopes at Station Park.

The League One parttimers were celebrating after goals from Callum Tapping and Ross Forbes saw them qualify for the knockout stages as a best runner-up behind Ross County. Wright, who takes his team to Celtic next week, slammed: “That was embarrassing.

“This proves that some of our younger players are not ready and some of our senior players didn’t help.

“It is worrying but hopefully they will learn and move on.

“It has been a disastrous Betfred Cup and we have to try and put that behind us and prepare for next week.

“I have learned a lot about the squad – and it is weak at the minute.”

Montrose had beaten Saints earlier in the group and the Loons piled on more misery.

Tapping got on the end of Forbes’ cross to force the ball home in the second minute.

They doubled their lead in 52 minutes when Forbes curled a brilliant free-kick past Elliott Parish. Saints got a goal back when sub Ross Callachan finally gave them a bit of urgency.

His deflected shot was saved by Marc McCallum but Matty Kennedy netted.

Delighted Forfar boss Jim Weir was delighted to get one over on his old team.

He said: “We knew it would be tough with two derbies and two Premiership teams in our group, so to get second place is great.

“Saints are a fantastic club but I am delighted to get a victory over them.”
