Pep Guardiola hailed hat-trick hero Raheem Sterling after he helped Manchester City get their title defence off to a flier.

The England ace shone in a 5- 0 win over West Ham in a London Stadium clash dominated by VAR.

Guardiola backed Sterling to star as a central striker and said: “I know the special qualities of the player, the consistency, physicality, the finishing.

“He is in his first days playing as a striker but for me striker will be an incredible position for him. But he can play in all three positions up front.”

Gabriel Jesus netted the opener and Sergio Aguero scored from a retaken penalty after Lukasz Fabianski saved his first effort but Declan Rice was penalised for encroaching into the box.

Eriksen began to open Villa up and it was from his 73rd minute corner that £ 53.8million man Ndombele found the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Heaton kept out a couple of Eriksen free-kicks as Spurs turned the screw, but he was helpless as Kane broke his duck at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Eric Lamela’s deflected pass fell to him eight yards out and he drilled his shot into the net.

Kane settled the game in the 90th minute with a sublime right-foot finish into the far, bottom corner.

The striker said: “We came out in the second half with a high tempo and pressed well. When Tanguy got his goal it was full throttle until the end. Thankfully a couple of chances fell to me.”

victory at Watford thanks to Abdoulaye Doucoure’s own goal, Florin Andone and Neal Maupay.
