Hubert dies in Belgium crash

-

Motorsport was in mourning last night after the death of Formula Two driver Anthoine Hubert at the Belgian Grand Prix.

The Frenchman, who raced for Arden, died fol lowing a 160mph collision at the SpaFrancorchamps track.

A number of drivers were involved in the second-lap accident on the exit of the fearsome Eau Rouge corner.

The 22-year- old was hit by EcuadorianAmerican driver Juan Manuel Correa after he had gone off into the barriers then slid across the track. Correa, whose car was left upside down, was taken to hospital and reported to be stable.

Former F1 driver Fernando Alon so tweeted: “What a sad afternoon. I have no words. It hurts the heart. Rest in peace, champ.”

On Instagram, F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton said: “This is devastating. God rest your soul Anthoine.

“My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.

“If a single one of you watching and enjoying this sport think for a second what we do is safe you’re hugely mistaken.

“All these drivers put their lives on the line when they hit the track and people need to appreciate that in a serious way because it is not appreciated enough.

“Not from the fans nor some of the people actually working in the sport. Anthoine is a hero as far as I’m concerned, for taking the risk he did to chase his dreams.

“I’m so sad that this has happened. Let’s lift him up and remember him. Rest in peace.”

Today’s F2 race has been cancelled.

Qualifying for the F1 race that took place before the incident, saw Charles Leclerc beat Sebastian Vettel by 0.748 secs as Ferrari took the front row. Hamilton will start off in third.
