£47m for BBC appeal WINNER ON KEEPING HIS COOL IN SHOW TENT

STARS from Strictly Come Dancing, Star Wars, Doctor Who and EastEnders have helped this year’s Children In Need TV appeal raise £ 47.9million.

People in Scot land contribute­d £ 3.9million to the total during the five-hour telethon.

Veteran news presenter Jackie Bird returned to the screen to host the BBC Scotland coverage from BBC’s studios at Pacif ic Quay in Glasgow.

Last year, £ 50.6million was raised nationwide on the appeal night.

When the heat was cranked up in the Great British Bake Off tent, David Atherton kept his cool to win the contest.

But then he has faced death threats in a warzone and been evacuated to safety twice.

So negative comments from Bake Off judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith were never going to worry him.

As an internatio­nal health adviser for the Voluntary Service Overseas organisati­on, trained nurse David has suffered malaria nine times.

And he learned to keep his head as the sound of explosions echoed around him in Ethiopia and Nigeria.

David, 36, said: “There were bombs going off all around.

“The windows smashed in our house. It was frightenin­g. There were people on the streets with clubs and machetes shouting threats to kill. That was scary.

“I’ve been in life or death situations when I’ve been treating children with malaria.

“I was able to keep things in perspectiv­e and kept reminding myself on Bake Off that even if my pastry was soggy or my cake didn’t rise properly, I’ve coped with more serious situations.”
