Liam deserves a cap call

- Scott McDermott

John McGinn would love to see his Serie A pal Liam Henderson in the Scotland squad.

The pair won the Scottish Cup together for Hibs and remain good friends – even though Henderson is now playing for Italian side Hellas Verona.

Despite Scotland’s strength in the middle of the park, the Aston Villa ace believes Henderson (right) is good enough to get in.

And he’s full of admiration for the former Celtic kid, who’s now played abroad in two different countries having previously been on loan at Rosenborg.

McGinn said: “Liam’s more than capable of playing for Scotland. I’m in contact with him all the time and I know how good he is. I’m sure Scotland’s staff will be watching and I’d love to see him involved.

“He’s a top player. He’s gone somewhere different, which not many players do.

“I keep an eye on him and I noticed he came on at the San Siro last week. Hopefully he can get more game time and be involved with Scotland.

“Moving abroad is something Liam always had in him. He calls himself a culture vulture.

“He likes nice restaurants by the water and sipping a cappuccino! It’s not my cup of tea but full credit to Liam for challenging himself.

“He’s the sort of guy who gets on with anybody.

“He’s open to learning other languages and I’m sure he’ll be speaking Italian.

“He wants to learn and improve.

“Moving to Norway matured him as a young player and gave him a taste of European football. “The way he plays suits that style.

“If he’s involved with Scotland in the future it would be great but we have got a lot of top midfielders.”
