It’s a perfect day for Tommy

- Scott McDermott

Jubilant St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright celebrated a ‘perfect’ day for the Perth side as they leapfrogged Hearts off the bottom of the table.

Sub Callum Hendry’s secondhalf header was enough to seal the points at Tynecastle as Saints inflicted Daniel Stendel’s first defeat in Scottish football.

Saints fully deserved their victory for being solid at the back and a threat up front.

And Wright hailed his stars for a terrific win and goal hero Hendry for making an impact off the bench.

He said: “It was a perfect day for us with a good solid performance.

“We knew how they were going to play because I had watched Barnsley games so we worked on trying to get in behind them as early as possible because they press you high up the pitch.

“Michael O’Halloran should have scored in the first half.

“I’m really pleased overall. The win was well deserved and it’s been coming because we’ve looked stronger at the back and a real threat up front.

“Our keeper wasn’t overworked so no-one can begrudge us the victory because they didn’t create a clear-cut chance.

“Bringing Callum on worked for us. He has a habit of nicking goals and should have scored with the one that led to the corner for his winner.

“He showed great movement, we had great delivery and it was a good header.

“I am really pleased for him, he has bounced back well from the moment of madness that he had against Aberdeen when he was sent off.

“He is scoring pretty regularly for us now.

“He scores when he comes off the bench and we have to make sure that when he starts he does better. But he is an important member of the squad.”
