Big Dunc out, Carlo in .. but do new gaffers know what’s ahead?

happy with me – I’m still in a job!

“I’ve always had ambitions and the great man Howard Kendall believed in me. He always felt that one day I would become Everton manager. I’ve done that, albeit for four games.”

For extending his unbeaten league run he can thank the Gunners’ Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who wasted a couple of inviting chances, and Emiliano Martinelli’s miss.

Meanwhile, Everton didn’t force Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno into a single save.

The first chance of an error-strewn game that turned the shortest day of the year into the longest didn’t arrive until just before the break.

Lucas Torreira survived a late tackle from Tom Davies, that earned the Everton midfielder a yellow card, to set Gabriel Martinelli free.

The lively forward accelerated into the box but, with just Jordan Pickford to beat, he sliced wide.

Aubameyang’s golden opportunity arrived in the 51st minute .

Calum Chambers’ flick-on from a corner found the Gunners striker unmarked at the far post.

But his mis- hit effort allowed Pickford to palm it to safety. Within 60 seconds Aubameyang was back in the danger area again only this time to prod tamely at the keeper.

Ljungberg said: “Against City we didn’t have enough energy and we didn’t respect the game enough.

“That’s why I picked the team that I did. I have rewarded these boys who have worked hard in training.

“I told them it was their time and to show me – and they did.

“We really put in an effort there and I’m proud of them.

“The club have said they want me to stay so I will have a chat with Mikel.”
