Defoe’s ready to sign
ends in June, allows him to pen a pre-contract.
Rangers have already extended the contracts of Allan McGregor and Steven Davis. But Defoe – who scored his 14th goal of the season in Friday’s win over Hibs – said: “My situation is different to theirs.
“But hopefully it will be sorted and I can enjoy this season, we can achieve something special together then I can look forward to next season.
“It’s a special club to play for. Since I’ve been here I’ve not thought about going anywhere else. It’s a massive club.
“The manager and those at the club have made it clear they want me to stay.
“From day one, the appreciation from the fans and the people around the training ground and at the club has been amazing.
“I’ve only been here a short time and it’s a nice feeling for myself and my family.”
The size of Defoe’s deal at Bournemouth prevented the Ibrox side making a permanent move for the frontman in the first place.
But the striker was quick to point out his talks are about more than just money. He said: “At this stage of my career it’s about football and, as you can see, I love it here.”
Gerrard will give his players a few days off after the clash with Celtic next Sunday before flying out with the squad for a winter camp in Dubai.
And he’s hopeful Defoe can be tied up by then.
Gerrard said: “We’ve sat down with Jermain. We just have to respect Bournemouth but when the time is right and Jermain is ready, we are ready.”
