When I bought my first house, I was told that I wouldn’t get a mortgage unless I signed up for payment protection insurance. I’ve been in touch with the bank but I’m getting nowhere. Am I entitled to compensati­on?

The bank should have contacted you within eight weeks of your initial complaint. You have six months from the date of the final response to take matters to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Carol, a former HR worker with the NHS, took out the plan with a mortgage in 1994, paying £53.05 a month.

She said: “The original idea was that the endowment would pay off the loan.

But with endowments having such bad press, I made sure I had things covered. In the end, the

£25,000 was to bolster my savings.”
