Character in battle to escape drop

-

Gabby McGill’s effort was parried by Danny Rogers before Euan Murray netted the rebound.

In a predictably dour affair, both teams battled with the elements as much as they battled against one another.

It said much about the game that Kyle Jacobs’ leveller for Morton came after Luca Colville’s cross was headed into the air by Robbie Muirhead before Jacobs converted with a second header. With the bit between their teeth, it was Ton who took advantage of the game just five minutes after the break.

Lewis Strapp’s deft backheel found Colville whose cross was converted by a powerful header from Jim McAlister at the back post.

Morton put the game out of reach with five minutes of regulation time remaining when Jacobs headed in his second. The goal settled any anxiety around Cappielow and was a just reward for a battling performance from the hosts.

Kevin Nisbet dispatched a sumptuous free-kick into the top right-hand corner with what proved to be the last kick of the ball.

It was too little, too late for Dunfermline but added to Nisbet’s increasingly impressive scoring stats.

Pars chief Stevie Crawford said: “I thought we were excellent in the first half-hour, when we scored a good goal.

“That seemed to upset Morton who came after us and had a good spell at the end of the first half.

“When that happens, it’s important to ride it out but we lost a poor goal to allow them back into the game.

“This is a young squad with a lot of potential but we need to learn quickly. Every goal we conceded here was preventable.”
