Sid: Fans want 10 not cash

- Scott McDermott

Rake in £60million for two of your top players or keep them to win 10 in a row?

That’s a dilemma Celtic could face this summer.

But Simon Donnelly insists the Hoops should pull out the stops to retain Odsonne Edouard and Callum McGregor.

Sid insists the chance to make history should far outweigh topping up the club’s bank balance.

He was part of the Hoops side who stopped Rangers reaching 10 in 1998.

So he knows how what it means to Old Firm fans.

Donnelly said: “There’s always concern that bids come in for the likes of Edouard and McGregor in the summer.

“But if you lose your best players it’s always a risk to find other ones.

“Celtic’s recruitment up to now has been good. But they’ll want to hold on to Edouard for another couple of seasons.

“I’d keep them and get the 10. That’s what the support want. They want to beat the record.”

The Hoops take on St Johnstone in today’s Scottish Cup quarter-final still on course for a fourth consecutive Treble.

And Donnely warned Old Firm rivals Rangers they could face an even longer wait for the league title.

He said: “Rangers are craving success because Celtic have had so much.

“The pressure of trying to stop 10 could be off the scale for them next season.

“For the last two seasons they’ve got close but have eventually fallen away.

“Celtic just seem to come up with answers. There’s something in this Hoops team that takes a setback on the chin, kicks on and finds form again.”

Donnelly was talking at an event organised by William Hill, the sponsors of the Scottish Cup.
