- Jennifer Hyland

Judy Murray has revealed the emotional turmoil suffered by son Andy as he battles the latest injury to threaten his career.

The double Wimbledon champ’s mum has admitted she doesn’t know when the tennis ace will make his comeback. Her comments came after the former world No1 last week told how he fears he needs another hip operation.

The 32-year-old went under the surgeon’s knife last year – but has been hit with a new blow related to the pprocedure. Judy, 60, has said the latest setback had been an “incredible physical and emotional cchallenge” for the Dunblane-bornb ace. Speaking to Zara Janjuaon the Royal Bank of Scotland’s S Ask For MorMore podcast, Judy saisaid: “Andy’s got so mmany fans out ththere and ever ybody wants want to know when you’re going goin to see him aagain.

“OOf ten the answer answ to that iiss , ‘ I don’t know’. kno “Because you yo don’ t kknow.n You don’t don know how long an injur injury is going to take to rrehabe or re repair itself or what more you might have to go through.

“You do your rehab, you go back into training. You start gently, you build it up. You test it out, you go into competition. You test it out there.

“Then you see where you’re at and you have to adjust your schedule of training and competition to create a balance.

“You can’t just go from doing nothing for a long time to doing five sets at the Australian Open, for example.

“He’s not going to rush anything, he’s going to take time and make sure his body is absolutely ready before he puts it back in again. But it’s an incredible physical and emotional challenge for him.”

The three-time Grand Slam winner has been sidelined by a heterotopic ossif ication – where extra bone grows in soft tissue after surgery.

Judy, also mum to seven-time Grand Slam doubles winner Jamie, has revealed that when experiencing setbacks, Andy’s support network plays an important role.

She added: “When things are tough, when there’s failure, or defeat, or disappointment or a setback, this is where the emotional support around you really kicks in. “

The RBS podcast, featuring Judy and Diana Hunt Borland, an architect and philanthropist is being released to coincide with the launch of the new Royal Bank of Scotland £20 note featuring Glasgow- born entrepreneur Kate Cranston.
