Soldiers take aim in virtual training
Troops are to get combat- ready using virtual reality training based on the hit online video game Fortnite.
A state-of-the-art simulator, using the same software, is being trialled by British squaddies.
The interactive approach allows 30 soldiers to take part at the same time in virtual battlefield combat.
Headset-wearing soldiers can hold replica guns as well as crouch and crawl.
The simulator, named Saf-Tac, uses the Unreal Engine 4 – the software utilised by Fortnite.
Gaming bosses claim it will make combat training more “realistic, intuitive and immersive”.
Software firm SimCentric was awarded £300,000 from the Government after successful tests with the Parachute Regiment at the Infantry Training Centre Catterick in Yorkshire.
Forces chiefs say the simulator – which features high- definition surround sound and ultra- realistic graphics – can mimic real-life training exercises.
Tests will be rolled out this year with the Army, RAF and Royal Marines.
MoD science adviser Professor Dame Angela McLean said: “We are committed to developing innovative ways to combat the challenges our Armed Forces face. This new simulator is one way we are bringing training into the next generation.”
Tom Constable, a director of SimCentric and a former Army officer, said :“This technology will reduce the risk to our forces and improve the quality of training, with the aim of saving lives.”
