We’ll Ronk to victory in fairytale BBL finish
Solent Kestrels star Brendan Okoronkwo reckons his team can win the BBL
Trophy in Glasgow today – after rivals Newcastle were hit by a walk-out.
Their odds were slashed when foreign stars Mike Morsell, Nick Schlitzer and Sade Hussein quit and jetted home in a coronavirus panic.
That news has handed non-league Solent a real shot at ending a fairytale run with a storybook finish.
The south coast side have won 30 of their 31 games this season and Okoronkwko said: “We’ve had to stop and reflect. In games when we’ve been well ahead, we’ve stopped and said, ‘Hold on, let’s have some fun’.
“We play at our best when we’re having fun. It’s a long trip up. There’s jokes on the way. And we will take the time to appreciate it. But we do believe we can win.”
Meanwhile, BBL bosses are facing calls to shut down their season tonight – with
Glasgow Rocks in line to pick up the title.
With the Rocks and other clubs set for severe crowd restrictions, there may be no option but to call it quits.
Glasgow director David Low is fuming the BBL hasn’t already shut down. He said: “The health risks to the players, officials and the public are too great.” And
Durham Palatinates coach Lee Davie reckons his Scottish stars can help them deny Leicester Riders WBBL Trophy final hat-trick.
Former Riders stars Dee Hayward and Claire Paxton are now aiming to sink their former team.
Davie said: “We have picked their brains about what Leicester will do.”
