Title boost for Asp wedding

- ■ Craig Swan

Nathan Aspinall banked another £10,000 to pay for his wedding with a second Players Championship crown of 2020.

The English ace sank Brendan Dolan 8- 4 in Barnsley to keep long-term partner Kirsty- Louise sweet ahead of their big day.

Michael van Gerwen was one of four Dutchmen beaten by Aspinall en route to success in the seventh event of the series.

And the world No.7, who also won the second at the same venue last month, needs every penny going.

He laughed and said: “The other half is booking our wedding soon and it’s about time I did it.

“It has been 10 years. Now she is going to tie me down so I need the money!

“I played steady at times and not so well at others but I’m really happy. I’m full of confidence and was determined to have a good run this weekend.

“I know what I can produce and how good I am. There is no reason why I can’t win more titles.”

Dolan had led 4-2 only for Aspinall to win six legs on the spin as two 12darters helped clinch the fifth title of his PDC career.

Aspinall, 28, said: “It was a weird day. First two games I was steady then I kicked in.

“Then it went pants again. I beat Michael with a 93 average, which is unheard of. But it’s a second tournament of the year and I am very happy.

“I’m feeling bri l liant and full of confidence. I got a Premier League draw against Gary (Anderson) on Thursday where I played really well and I took it into this day. I know where my game is at. I’m playing well and everyone knows that.”

Derk Telnekes, a new Tour card holder, provided one of the stories of the day outside of Aspinall’s win.

The Dutchman, 24, reached a PDC quarterfinal for the first time by defeating Scotland World Cup duo Peter Wright and Anderson on the way.

Dolan stopped Telnekes’ streak then routed James Wade 7-1 only to come unstuck in the showpiece.

Aspinall added: “People still write me off going into tournaments but I just do my thing and have no antics. I love the sport and just want to get up there and play. Come December, why can’t I have won more titles than the lot of them?”
