Holt: This is like a horror movie.. it’s biggest crisis our game’s ever had

- ■ Gordon Parks

Gary Holt last night claimed that the coronavirus crisis could become an Armageddon event for Scottish football.

The Livingston boss fears the joint decision by the SFA and SPFL to suspend fixtures at all levels has sounded the death knell for Scottish football in its current form.

With chaos current ly engulfing sport worldwide as a result of the pandemic, Holt called for the confusion over the lockdown to be resolved.

He also urged Scots clubs to pull together to insulate each other from the inevitable f inancial disaster

set to hit clubs l iving a hand-to-mouth existence.

He said: “It’s an Armageddon moment not just for football but for all sport.

“Make no mistake, this is the biggest crisis Scottish football has ever faced.

“We need to decide if we just stop or do we fight back? Are we just going to grind to a halt?

“It’s unprecedented and in my lifetime I never would have thought I’d be seeing what I am. The past few weeks are like something out of a horror movie. It’s hard to comprehend that this is a new reality.

“The situation is l ike something you would read in books or see in movies as you never think it’s going to happen or that you are going to be a part of it.

“It has caught everyone by surprise and we are all in the same boat.

“I don’t blame the SFA, the SPFL or the powers that be but we are governed by these people and they provide the guidance we adhere to.

“I don’t believe we’re getting the correct guidance from elsewhere.

“Should the approach be about containing this virus rather than allowing people to spread it?”

Holt is also well aware that football and sport fades into i n signi f icance a s t he ramif ications of the virus start to impact on wider society, with both work and home life affected.

He said: “It’s at times like these that football means nothing.

“This is far bigger than anything around sport.

“Scottish people are known as being warm and welcoming. Anywhere you go in the world we are well known and loved for that.

“Now the Scottish people need to show that they can look after their own Scottish people and come together to fight this virus.

“This disease will have far reaching consequences, it’s going to bankrupt businesses, people will sadly lose their lives and for most of us it is terrifying.

“We need to help one another out, this is no time for a ‘Don’t worry about me, I’m alright Jack’ approach.

“It can’t be allowed to become someone else’s problem. We have to help and come together by doing as much as we can to help all of our clubs.

“I don’t know how we will do it but there must be ways.”
