looked as if Abercromby’s days of sparking midfield mayhem might be over for good.

However, Alex Smith came in as gaffer and decided he could use a midfielder who wasn’t afraid to go in where it hurts.

Abercromby was restored to the team after suspension and he helped the Buddies go all the way to the Scottish Cup Final where they beat Dundee United 1- 0 at Hampden thanks to an Ian Ferguson goal.

From villainy to victory in the space of a few short months. Even Abercromby must have found it hard to believe as held aloft the trophy as Buddies captain. and Eintracht were much better than us.

“I didn’t go to the final but the city was buzzing. To have Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas – probably the two best players in the world – playing at Hampden was great and they put on some show for the fans.

Wilson would finally get a taste of it three years later, when Madrid beat Rangers 7-0 in the preliminary round of the 1963 European Cup.

Wilson revealed: “It has been really good recounting tales from my career.”
