Going down could get Jambos on up again

-

Gary Mackay insists Hearts will only have themselves to blame if they are relegated because the season cannot be completed.

The Gorgie club are facing the drop as they await the final decision on the SPFL’s plan to end the season amid the coronavirus crisis.

But Jambos legend Mackay admits his old club can have no complaints if they find themselves in the Championship at the end of it all.

They were at the foot of the table before the shutdown and Mackay, Hearts’ appearance record holder, said: “It’s our failings that made us be at the bottom of thehe league.

“Yes, there was an opportunity to get out of that and thatat could be taken away from us.

“People can debatee whether it’s fair or not but somewhere mewhere along the line decisionsns have to be taken.”

Mackay (right) believes eves that relegation could actually be good for

Hearts – as they could d use it to improve the whole structure of the club.

He said: “It would be hugely disappointing and a huge boot for the club if it happens but it would give a chance to actually build, under the ownership of the fans, a football club without people having their own agendas.

“Hopefully we can learn from the mistakes of the previous project, which has ultimately got us to where we are now.

“And as supporters we’ll have to do what wwe’ve done over the last 10, 12 yeayears and make sure we drive them on to success.

“ButB we can’t be bluffed aga again and that will be down to tthe supporters and people taking tak on the club.

“TThere will be massive decisions decisi that have to be made to reresurrect the club on the back b of what would be a huge h disappointment.”
