DOUBLE JEOPAYRDY

Ross: I could go from trying to get Honest Men into Premiership to falling into League One overnight .. it’s not right, it’s unfair

I’m probably in a unique position .. it would be a double whammy. I might not get the chance to have a good ending at Ayr and it just doesn’t seem right for Thistle to be sent down like this. Partick were still capable of getting to safety – so not to have the chance isn’t right. It’s crazy

The latest SPFL proposals to try to sort out the season will affect every player in Scotland one way or another.

The plans were stalled on Friday after falling just short in the Championship but Dundee have still to cast their vote officially and if they join the ‘ Yes’ camp then the lower leagues will be called early.

For Ayr United skipper Ross Docherty, it would be a DOUBLE whammy if it’s pushed through.

The midfielder wouldn’t just miss out on a potential play- off with the Honest Men and a crack at the Premiership.

Having signed a pre-contract deal with Partick Thistle, Docherty faces being dropped to League One without kicking a ball for the Jags.

The 27-year- old wanted to end the campaign on a high by steering Ayr into the Championship’s top four before attempting to get them to the top flight.

Then he was looking forward to the biggest move of his career so far by joining his former gaffer Ian McCall at Firhill, who has ambitions of leading Thistle to the Premiership.

Instead, if the league’s idea is rubber stamped, Docherty won’t get the send off he deserves at Somerset . And he’ l l be plodding in Scotland’s third tier next term following the

J a g s ’ forced relegation. He believes it would be grossly unfair if his new club suf fers as a result of the COVID-19 lockdown, given the fact they’re only two points off Queen of the South with a game in hand.

Docherty is well aware that people’s health is far more important than football but he can’t hide how gutted he’ll be if he’s forced to take two blows at once.

He said: “I’m probably in a unique position. It would be a double whammy.

“I might not get the chance to have a good ending to five years at Ayr United.

“And it just doesn’t seem right for Thistle to be sent down like this.

“They signed players in January to help them get out of trouble and also, like me, for next season.

“They wouldn’t have budgeted to be in League One. Who’s to say they would have made those signings if they knew they’d be put in the division below?

“When teams go down, there will always be cuts across the board. “Thistle were still capable of getting to safety. Not to have the chance to do it isn’t right.

“Not to be in control o f
