HER MISSION TO HELP YOUNG WOMEN OF COLOUR NEWS STAR MOIRA IS MY AFRO HAIRO
Presenter’s natural style inspired supermodel
Ruby Williams received an outof-court settlement after taking her former school to court for repeatedly sending her home because of her afro hair.
Ruby, 18, took action against her London school after she was told her hair breached policy, which stated “afro- style hair must be of reasonable size and length”.
She claimed the school’s headteacher said her hair was “too big” and blocked views of the whiteboard. The school did not accept any liability.
Eunice, who in 2017 was awarded an MBE for her services to broadcasting, arts and charity, said: “There have been lots of incidents in the last few years of people of colour being sent home from school after being told their afro is too big or because they have put their hair in cornrows.
“Afro hair is not a fashion statement – it’s that person’s hair and cornrows are used to protect it. I don’t blame the teachers – as it’s clear they have no understanding of what they are asking their kids to do. We need to educate everyone about afro hair.”
Eunice will be one of six judges – including Ruby Williams – to officiate at World Afro Day’s Top 10 Mode l Competition.
It’s on September 15 and promotes education and appreciation of afro hair. The competition seeks anyone aged six to 18 years old with afro or curly hair and who is of African descent to share their hair story.
Other judges include US catwalk star Celai West, photographer Misan Harriman and Dr Zoe Williams– Amazon on TV show Gladiators. Visit www.worldafroday.com/model to find out more.
