Six years later, Martin didn’t look quite so bad when Scotland lost 9-3 at Wembley with Celtic’s Frank Haffey having a nightmare.

Hapless Haffey was a late replacement for Airdrie’s Lawrie Leslie who had an eye injury.

Leslie’s wife Jeanette said: “Even with both eyes stitched, my Lawrie wouldn’t have lost nine goals.” Ouch!

The English FA could lead the way with fans returning to football – in the cup final on August 1.

It’s understood plans are being explored to allow a maximum of up to 10,000 fans from each side to cheer on their team at Wembley.

But only if the Covid-19 infection rate has dipped below 0.5 when the game rolls around. If the health advice allows, Wembley’s 90,000 capacity would be ideal to trial a return to action in front of supporters.

Senior stadium officials believe Wembley’s layout would enable them to control the flow of fans in and out of the stadium.

Keeping people away from the remainder of the Premier League season is considered vital, with officials worried about a second spike.

But football authorities believe they could be given the go-ahead to admit fans back in a phased experiment when the new season starts sometime in September.

A football administrator said: “Fans will be allowed back to see sport at some stage – not just in football.

“We already know there is no chance of grounds opening up and being filled to capacity. But discussions have taken place about a phased return of spectators when government health advice allows.

“That will be in smaller numbers at f i rst and Wembley would seem a good place to start as it’s the country’s biggest stadium.”
