Robert keeps Bayern clear in Pole position

-

Robert Lewandowski snapped a personal jinx as Bayern continued their cruise towards eight in a row.

The Pole, below, scored twice in a 5-0 demolition of Fortuna Dusseldorf as Munich moved 10 points clear.

Closest rivals Borussia Dortmund visit bottom team Paderborn today.

Lewandowski’s double saw him match his top haul for a single season – set in the 2016-17 season – with 43 goals in 37 games.

And it ended his goal drought against 16th-placed Fortuna, having failed to score in five league games versus the club either with Bayern or his previous employer Dortmund.

Benjamin Pavard took centre stage when his scuffed shot led to Mathias Jorgensen’s own goal after 15 minutes.

The Frenchman then made it two just before the half hour with a header that Florian Kastenmeier got a hand to but could not keep out.

It was Lewandowski’s turn to shine as he capped a flowing move through the middle with a clinical finish from the heart of the penalty area in the 43rd minute. The goal-hungry hitman has now netted against every current Bundesliga team.

And he made it 4-0 five minutes after the break with another predatory finish, steering the ball in at the near post with a superb backheel from Serge Gnabry’s low cross.

Alphonso Davies completed the rout two minutes later after weaving his way past three defenders and firing a low shot past Kastenmaier, who pulled off several top saves in the final 30 minutes to deny Hansi Flick’s side an even bigger victory.

Werder Bremen boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation when Leonardo Bittencourt unleashed a thunderbolt into the top bin for a 1-0 win at Schalke.

The result left Werder in 17th, two points behind Fortuna who occupy the relegation play-off spot. But Schalke are in freefall, now winless in 11 games with just three

goals in that run.
