Bosses are rapped over VE Day party

- Jennifer Hyland

A care home has been criticised after staff risked spreading coronavirus to vulnerable residents during a VE Day party.

Workers flouted the two-metre social distancing rule during the event.

Footage shows carers without personal protection equipment (PPE) dancing, singing and mingling with elderly residents during the outdoor celebration at Glasgow’s Abbey Court in Easterhouse on May 8.

A family member of a resident, who asked not to be identified, said: “I’m concerned. I’ve a loved one there.

“There was no social distancing and no PPE being worn.”

The home’s general manager Brian Murray said: “We have had nothing but praise for our handling of the virus threat.

“You may have noticed from our other videos that social distancing was observed and on the occasion you are referring to we kept to social distancing as much as possible.

“But on some of the footage there were some overzealous residents who wanted to have a dance to celebrate VE Day.

“This was nearly 10 weeks into lockdown and all our residents and staff are healthy and well.

“If your source was genuinely concerned, they should have come to me.

“But as they are only interested in flaming fires that do not need flamed, I’m assuming they have nothing better to do with their day.

“At no time have our staff put anyone at risk, this is guaranteed.”

Last week, we revealed Carnbroe Care Centre in Coatbridge had come under fire after staff risked spreading coronavirus by dancing together and sharing a microphone during a visit from a pub DJ.
