Boris? Father of the nation? You have got to be kidding

- Boris Johnson. Below, Marcus Rashford

Wilfred, who’s now eight weeks old – with his partner, Carrie Symonds. This after leaving his previous wife, which prompted his eldest daughter Lara to reportedly call him a

“selfish b******”.

Still got elected Prime Minister, though, didn’t he, the Father of the Nation, in fact. Which, in his perfect delusion, he likely believes to be the ultimate parenting achievement, worthy of the World’s Greatest Dad plastic trophy.

We could guess that some of his brood might have preferred different achievements, if he’d ever taken the time to ask.

Sticking around for them might be one. Not chasing round like a randy golden retriever while married to their mum might be another.

So it takes young Manchester United ace Marcus Rashford, a 22-year-old who doesn’t have any children of his own yet and who grew up without the support of his dad, to show the PM compassion for kids.

Marcus’s intervention forced Johnson into a humiliating U-turn on summer holiday food payments to some of England’s poorest families.

The footballer, whose family relied on free school meals and food banks, started a campaign for £15-a-week food vouchers for vulnerable children to continue now the school term has been ended by Covid-19.

And BoJo, never one for listening, initially refused, until he realised he was on to a loser against a formidable, popular opponent and climbed down.

In his daily coronavirus briefing, he even managed to thank Rashford for his campaign, like the scandal of leaving kids hungry hadn’t been of his making. What sentient being, what father worth his weight in cartoon boxer shorts, would behave in such a way? “The well-being of our children should ALWAYS be a priority,” Rashford wrote in response to the PM’s change of heart, proving that nurturing kids, ensuring their welfare, is nothing to do with biological reproduction.

I’m sure my own father would forgive me for being so “woke” but we should use today to celebrate great dads – AND all positive male role models.
