Duty, added: “James McAvoy is a good friend and I love the way he carries himself.

“He’s another west coast Celtic fan and he’s off conquering the world as an actor. I like what he does with his time and his money. “He just shows you can go all the way to the top like that and keep yourself grounded and remember what’s right. James is a top lad.”

Compston added: “I used to be really ambitious. As I’ve got older, I’m not less driven but I’ve seen a different side to it. You think, ‘Oh, I want to be this world-famous actor’ but it’s a hard life.

“I’ve got some friends in it and they don’t get a minute’s peace.

“I’ve had a small sort of sample of it with people wanting to know your business and you can’t really keep stuff private. It would be a lot of pressure.

“I think I’m at a good spot at the minute where I’m doing good- quality work and hopefully I’ll do another couple of films. I try not to think too far ahead and just live in the here and now.”

Compston, who recently starred in BBC drama The Nest, married American wife Tianna at Mar Hall in Renfrewshire in 2016. The couple moved to Las Vegas, where Tianna was brought up, but the vast majority of the actor’s work is in Britain. He shot to fame as a teenager when he was cast by filmmaker Ken Loach for the leading role in his film Sweet Sixteen.

Compston was speaking during an Instagram live chat to raise funds for Ardgowan Hospice in Greenock, of which he is patron.
