Game’s up for some

-

Craig Gordon fears a generation of footballers could be lost to the game.

The Scotland keeper is on the lookout for a new club after leaving Celtic.

But while he has a choice of clubs chasing him, he knows other players are not as fortunate as him.

He said: “It’s the worst possible time to be out of contract, with something like this is going on.

“Guys further down the leagues have been affected by this even more.

“They are relying on this money, their contracts to be sorted out, to have some security. A lot of these guys could be squeezed out and lost to the game.

“A lot of teams are carrying very few players at the moment down the leagues. They are going to have to build smaller squads, so what happens to all the rest of the guys that are looking for contracts?

“They are going to have to accept much lower wages or are going to have to leave football and f ind other work to support their families.

“From a player’s point of view there is an awful lot of uncertainty with all of this.”

Gordon insists that Scottish football’s civil war hasn’t helped.

He said: “That has been the worst thing in all this. Everyone has been fighting amongst each other but not managed to come together to sort it out A, for the clubs and B, for the players.

“That’s been forgotten about quite a lot of the time. There’s hundreds of players out of contact in this situation and it doesn’t seem to matter about that.

“It ’s all about the clubs, their self-interest and everyone looking out for themselves.”
