POLSTER QUITS FOR NEW DEAL

- ■ Fraser Wilson

Matt Polster is set to leave Rangers and join New England Revolution in a deal worth up to £ 400,000 to boost his USA World Cup hopes.

The right-back has made just 10 top team appearances in 18 months at Ibrox after failing to dislodge skipper

James Tavernier and is eager for

regular football. The 27-yearold, signed for free by Steven Gerrard from Chicago Fire in January 2019, still has a year left on his contract at Ibrox.

Rangers are keen to keep hold of the player but won’t stand in his way if their valuation is met.

And MailSport understands New England Revolution are set to seal a deal in the next 24 hours, beating off competition from rivals Nashville SC with the MLS season about to restart after the Covid-19 lockdown.

Polster was missing from the

Rangers squad as they returned to training last month as he got physio on a niggling problem with his back.

Now he is fully fit and hungry for first-team football with a place in the US World Cup qualifying squad up for grabs.

He is determined to catch the eye of US boss Gregg Berhalter despite winning just one cap – against Bosnia and Herzegovina in a 2018 friendly. A source said: “Matt loves Rangers but for his own good and his chances of getting back in the

USA squad he knows he needs to be playing regularly.

“There’s a World Cup coming up and as he enters what should be his prime as a player then Matt wants to be playing.”

Polster was expected to move on loan in January but he was thrust into action after the winter break as Tavernier underwent appendix surgery. He started home and away wins against Ross County and a goalless draw with Aberdeen but soon found himself back on the sidelines.

Polster broke through at Chicago after being selected in the 2015

MLS SuperDraft.
