New Dundee United boss Micky Mellon saw his side fall to Motherwell in their first game since he arrived from Tranmere Rovers.

The Steelmen emerged 1- 0 winners after Jordan White reacted first to the rebound when Harry Robinson hit the bar.

United weren’t without their chances however as Kai Fotheringham hit the post and Louis Appere also came close with a deflected effort.

Nicky Clark marked his comeback from injury with his first match in six months and Mellon liked what he saw from the Premiership new boys.

He said: “It was a good run out with no injuries and we got an idea of where we can work moving forward as individuals and a group. To go up against a strong Premiership team and perform like we did was pleasing.

“We will go on to the training field next week and work on the little things we can improve on with a view to building towards the start of the league campaign.”

Another player returned from a long spell on the sidelines as Ryan Porteous managed 45 minutes for Hibs in a 1-1 draw with St Mirren.

Teenager Jay Henderson fired the Buddies in front before Hibs’ first signing of the window Drey Wright teed up Jamie Gullan for the leveller.

Hibs’ other arrivals Alex Gogic and Kevin Nisbet sat it out to do fitness work.

And Aberdeen and Ross County played out a 2-2 draw at the Dons’ Cormack Park base.

Bruce Anderson notched a double for the home side while Regan Charles-Cook and Billy Mckay netted for the Staggies. I work really hard because it’s one of the qualities I was given as a kid. You work hard to get what you deserve. I think the environment you
