Macks for all at Morton

-

Big-hearted Morton bosses have arranged for elderly armchair – and wheelchair – fans to be able to watch the Tail O’ The Bank club in action next season for free.

Chief executive David MacKinnon decided it was time for payback after OAPs who have supported the club all their lives turned up at Cappielow recently to quiz him on what was happening with their heroes.

Now he’s helped to set up a scheme which will allow the club’s grey- and-white army to support from afar.

Mackinnon said: “The men who came to see me were just supporters who were concerned about their club and wanted to know what was happening.

“I’ve been posting articles on the website but they hadn’t seen them because they don’t have computers.

“I gave them my number so that they could call me with any questions and one guy, Hamish, calls me just about every day looking for some updates.

“Last week he asked me when our games would start and I explained that there’s no guarantee that any fans will be allowed inside the ground when they do.

“I tried to cheer him up by saying that we’ll be starting our own Morton TV to stream matches. I explained to Hamish that he could only watch it online, which really disappointed him.

“I later had a chat with Brian McLaughlin from our Community Trust and he spoke with Caledonian MacBrayne. They agreed to supply laptops for older fans.

“We’ ll hand them out before the season starts and the Trust will help them with the technology.”

MacKinnon also intends to pay a permanent tribute to the club’s former players, officials and fans who died after contracting Covid-19.

He said: “I’ve received emotional emai ls from people who have lost loved ones with a connection to Greenock Morton.

“I’m planning to build a Memorial Wall to pay our respects to everyone from the club who has died.

“I’d like to think it will help pay tribute to those who are no longer with us.”
