Justin time to seal a return to top-flight

-

Former Dundee United winger Justin Johnson has been handed the chance to win a return to the Premiership with Hamilton Accies.

The Dutchman featured for Accies in yesterday’s 2-1 friendly win over St Mirren as Brian Rice looks to boost his forward line.

Johnson played 20 minutes as Hamilton stepped up their preparations for the curtain raiser at Celtic Park in two weeks’ time. FC United of Manchester goal machine Tunde Owolabi also got the last 20 minutes as he looks to win a deal in South Lanarkshire.

Rice will continue to monitor the duo as he looks to beef up his frontline which has been weakened by the departures of Mikel Miller, Steve Davies and George Oakley.

Johnson, 23, signed for

Cypriot side Othellos Athienou two years ago, having moved to York from Tannadice in 2017.

He started his pro career with United but made just five appearances across three seasons, scoring once.

Johnson spent last season on loan at fellow Cypriot club Akritas Chlorakas, scoring once in 16 outings.

Owolabi smashed in 35 goals for FC United of Manchester in the Northern Premier League last season to catch the eye of Hamilton boss Rice.

New signings Callum Smith, Charlie Trafford and Ross Callachan all featured for Accies who raced into the lead in the first minute through David Moyo.

Lewis Smith doubled the lead on the half hour before St Mirren pulled one back through striker Jon Obika shortly before the interval at the Fountain of Youth Stadium.

He denied it, only to leave his laptop on one day with his username on show.

Even if I had a nightmare of a game he’d back me to the hilt, my mum too.

Although when her text still read, “Not a great result today but you were man of the match” the day I was sent off, I knew to take their opinions with a pinch of salt.

Maybe they will get to see a bit more of me if the SPFL go with the plan for five subs.

For the highest level I’m not a fan but here in League One, the selfish side of me wouldn’t mind it so much – because I’m more likely to get game time and even if you come on as a sub you bank a full-win bonus.

We’re talking £20 after tax so it’s not big bucks but every little helps with a wedding in April to pay for.

I remember one game we were winning 4-1 and I was stripped and ready but the ball wouldn’t go out.

Stoppage time was up but I managed to get on. As the ball was kicked to me the ref blew the final whistle. I just caught the ball and that was me – full win bonus.

Mind you, it was a superb catch – our keepers at East Fife should watch it back. Better viewing than Murray’s kitchen on repeat.
