Davo: New NI boss is perfect fit

-

Steven Davis can’t wait to work with new Northern Ireland gaffer Ian Baraclough.

And the Rangers midfielder says the ex-Motherwell boss couldn’t be taking over at a better time.

Baraclough has a hard act to follow after Michael O’Neill’s successful spell in charge of the national side before taking charge at Stoke.

But with a Euro 2020 play-off on the horizon, Davis believes the new man can grab the bull by the horns.

And at 35, Davis is still keen to play his part. He has already experienced some of Baraclough’s coaching and expects a seamless transition when the squad gets back together.

The Ibrox star said: “I spoke to Ian a couple of days after he got the job. I’d had a few conversations with him previously because he was helping Michael prepare for the games in March before they were called off.

“I’m looking forward to working with him. It’s a shame for Michael, 100 per cent. He was hoping to see the campaign through to the Euros and we were all pleased for him to do that.

“Unfortunately he didn’t get the opportunity. But for Ian coming in, what a great time to get the job. We’re two games away from hopefully qualifying for a major tournament.

“Hopefully he can continue the good work we did under Michael.

“Ian has worked with a few of the players and a lot of the younger guys.

“He has come up to work with the senior squad on a couple of occasions so he knows what it’s all about.

“He knows how Michael worked and while he will want to put his own stamp on things, with such important games coming up then in the short- term, he will look to continue the good work.”
