Colman loves pulling on the woolies to play the Queen

- Olivia ■ Sarah Robertson

The Crown star Olivia Colman has revealed she has something in common with the Queen – a love of woolly jumpers.

The Oscar winner plays the monarch in the hit Netflix TV series. And she admitted she loved f ilming scenes in Scotland because she liked the practical clothes – such as pullovers and wool skirts – the Queen would wear. Olivia, 46, said: “I like the clothes we wore in Scotland, which were jumpers and wool socks – the least glamorous s tuf f . But costume designer Amy Roberts and her team did three-quarters of my job for me.

“Without them, it would be impossible.”

Olivia said she didn’t struggle wearing the actual crown – unlike the real Queen, who had to practise before her Coronation in 1953 to be able to bear the weight.

She said: “We had stage versions. They copy them and make them in lighter material.

“The Queen had to practise to strengthen her neck because she had to sit still for hours and it weighs so many pounds. That’s really horrible, so ours are a piece of cake.”

Olivia took over the role of the monarch from Claire Foy in season three of The Crown, which returns for its fourth series in November.

Filming gave Olivia the chance to meet up again with Helena Bonham Carter, who plays Princess Margaret.

Olivia, who won a best actress Golden Globe for the series, said: “I’d like to say we have become life-long friends. We found it very easy to get on with one another and it became quite sisterly.”

Helena, 54, said: “I’ve never had a sister and I’ve always wanted one and now I have got one.”

In series four, Princess Diana marries Prince Charles and Gillian Anderson plays prime minister Margaret Thatcher.
