You don’t have to be in it to win it
Couple left prize zone four years ago
A gran has scooped the People’s Postcode Lottery – despite no longer living on the street which shared a £270,000 win.
Liz Keenan pocketed £30,000 from the prize pot, which was split between seven households.
But the 53-year- old has even more cause to toast her good luck after moving out of the winning zone four years ago.
The social worker said: “It ’ s quite funny I’ve won because of my postcode but no longer live there.” Winner s in St Blane’s Drive, Rut her glen, near Glasgow, will be announced by organisers today.
Two lucky households in the G73 2BD area, who wished to remain anonymous, won £ 60,000 each. Another five houses on the street each won £ 30,000.
Liz and her husband John, who owns a timber repair firm, moved to Hamilton in 2016.
However, their daughter Natasha took over the house so Liz, who has been a fan of the lottery for 16 years, kept playing the prize game.
She found out about the win in a video call with former X Factor star Danyl Johnson, who is a lottery ambassador, while at the family’s holiday home near Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca.
The couple plan to spend the money on retiring to Spain.
Liz added: “It was an exciting trip back to Scotland knowing there was a big cheque waiting for us.”
Hairdresser Natasha, who is due to get married next year, said: “It’s an amazing piece of luck.
“It’s the family home and I grew up here. After my mum and dad moved out, it was lying empty before I moved back. It’s just as well or they would have missed out. Most of the street is quiet and people are quite private – but my mum and dad aren’t like that.”
However, the family will need to wait a few weeks before cracking open the champagne to celebrate as Liz and John have been forced to self-isolate for two weeks due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Danyl said: “Congratulations to Liz and all our other winners in Rutherglen.
“It sounds l ike a really friendly community and I’m so happy we could bring them this amazing news.”
Today’s draw was promoted on behalf of Unicef. Players have raised more than £ 8.1million for the charity and more than £ 600million for other projects.
Liz added: “There are a couple of charities that we are thinking of sharing a wee bit with.
“I work in childcare so knowing it’s going back to the charities is good – and the £ 600million is really keeping these organisations going. I think it’s great that sort of money is going to the charities.”
