Duff just wants to impress too much

- Struggling

Celtic legend Packie Bonner has urged his countryman Shane Duf f y to forget about trying to impress armchair fans.

Ireland captain Duffy has struggled since his arrival at the Hoops in the summer.

But Bonner is convinced the mistakes he’s been making are down to him being desperate to please the punters.

The BBC Scotland pundit said: “Shane just needs to get back to basics and stick to what he’s good at.

“If anything, he’s guilty of trying too hard – plus he ta kes ever y thing emotionally as well.

“Against Aberdeen last weekend, instead of booting the ball into Row Z, he tried a chip, lost possession and Dons scored.

“He was trying to do something he shouldn’t be

doing – he wants to show everyone what a good player he is.

“But the best way for him to do that is to stick to meatand-potatoes defending.

“Shane’s a big, honest guy. He doesn’t want to be making mistakes. He has to start bossing people around more at the back.

“His whole game is about defending and organising others around him. Once he starts concentrating on that and showing his leadership qualities he’ll be fine.”

Bonner a lso reckons keeper Vasilis Barkas, who has lost his place to Scott Bain, needs time to bed in after his £ 5.5million move from AEK Athens.

He said: “Celtic have been switching between three and four at the back and it certainly won’t have helped.

“What Celtic are trying to do now is fit players into different systems and you can see sometimes that they’re caught in two minds during games.

“I would rather see them revert to four at the back.”
