Kid can take it to the Max

- ■ Scott McDermott

James Maxwell has plenty to live up to as a Rangers full- back – with James Tavernier and Borna Barisic currently the best in Scotland.

And Stephen Dobbie believes the on-loan Ibrox kid is copying them to help his development.

Maxwell was sent on loan to Queen of the South at the start of this season to get valuable game time.

And the 18-year-old has been terrific for Allan Johnston’s side – bagging two goals in his last two league games.

Dobbie, who knows what it’s like trying to break through the youth ranks at Rangers, has been hugely impressed by the teenage left-back.

And the Queens skipper believes his stint training with Gerrard’s first team, plus his Palmerston loan, can see Maxwell develop

at a rapid rate. He said: “James has done really well so far. He has been excellent and good going forward.

“He has obviously been watching how Tavernier and Barisic have been playing. He’s attackminded just like them.

“His game is all about getting forward and he has such a good engine. I’ve been impressed.

“You pick up wee things every day in training. You see the things they do.

“James is now trying to bring parts of it into his own game and this move can be a huge help in his development.”

Dobbie, who spent three years in the Rangers youth ranks, is trying to help Maxwell.

He said: “Being an experienced pro I try to help the kids at training and through games.

“It’s early days for him but it looks like if you do well at Rangers you’re going to get opportunities under Steven Gerrard.”
